The 5 [Must Have] Skills you need as an Online Marketer

It seems like everyone and their dog is 'trying' to jump aboard the "Make Money Online" bandwagon nowadays! If you think it's an easy ride and you'll get rich quick - Think Again my friend - Making money online is a Business like any other business, and to succeed you're going to need a certain skill-set, just as you would if you were setting up an office in the 'real-world' and you're going to need a strong and positive mind-set and
...a skill-set to match
I have over 35 years experience as a 'Marketer' with my successes and fair share of failures. In marketing you need to be able to deal with the two F's - "frustration and failure" (If you can't - DON'T DO IT!) and I am still learning every day. When you think you know it all, trust me, you don't! Be realistic, and be ethical and honest, and DO THE WORK REQUIRED!
There are now so many amateurs who think it's as simple as abc, and who are eroding the trust of consumers and the reputations and legitimacy of professional marketers with their silly claims and offers all over the place. Even sadder, while they continue to do all this damage to online marketing, they still don't earn a cent themselves. They will always remain in the 96%
The basics are, and always have been, the same, on or off line in terms of the skills you need to apply to increase your chances of success and here I will briefly cover the five essential skills that you must master to make it. Without taking the time and investment in yourself to acquire and master these skills you are simply wasting YOUR time and potentially damaging the industry as a whole.
Your 5 Essential Skills should be:
1: Finding
You are responsible for actually finding your prospects. The old adage "build it and they will come" does not work. They have to be told it's there and they have to be the right people who want to buy what you're selling. You have to identify who your prospects are, how and where to find them, and ensure that they are 'targeted' for your niche.
You can build a customer base of targeted prospects over time by having the right SEO on your website but in the meantime you must learn ways of tracking down the people you need to promote to whether it's on Social Media, via Email or Telephone, or any other means of advertising.
There are now effective tools available to assist you with this process and I will mention some of these at the end.
2: Inviting
You must be proficient at actually being able to "invite" and get prospects to come and see your business or offer, and persuade them to come and take a look at what it is you want to promote to them. You need to have the right tools for the job and the job here is to put your promotion in front of the right people and make them think "YES! I want to go and learn more about that!".
Identify potential problems that prospects in your niche might have and let your promotion offer a way, or ways to solve them if they take the trouble to just come and look. The real skill here is to learn (from those who are already successful) to it the right way. There are no shortcuts to learning and experience.
3: Presenting
Your "offer" should match your invite. There really is no point in hyping up something you want to sell in an advert only to lose the prospect as soon as they reach your offer because it is not as advertised. Presentation should always be simple and professional.
If you are bringing someone to a sales page then present the real benefits of your product or service. Tell your prospect how it will help with their problems, the problems you mentioned in your promotion.
If it's an opt in page then give them a good reason to give you their email address. A quality, high perceived value, free gift is always a winner - however you MUST ensure that the the giveaway is specific to your niche and will offer real value to them.
If you are promoting your website make sure your home page CLEARLY FULFILLS the three second rule (because three seconds is all you have to make them decide to stay - or go). Within three seconds they should be able to answer three questions about your website:
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
WHAT DO THEY DO?
WHAT CAN THEY DO FOR ME?
You can try an interesting experiment and go look at a few websites to see if you get these answers from each one you look at. Then do it with yours! If your website doesn't answer the three in three then re-think it. Not meeting the 3 in 3 rule is the reason many people get a 95%, or worse, bounce rate.
4: Follow Up
So you got an Opt In, a brand new subscriber who either gave you their email address or even purchased something from you (if you're very lucky). Woo-Hoo thanks for the money bye-ee! NO! You DO NOT just take the money and run!
You have just achieved an amazing thing. Someone placed their confidence and their trust in you for the first and only time. Now you have a choice - you can either try to build a relationship and cement that trust, or you can lose it instantly, never to do business with that person again. That's a very choice to make for anyone who wants success in business.
Staying in touch with people who have opted in but are not yet customers is much easier and more automated nowadays and having a good auto-responder is worth its weight in gold. However automation is useless if you're not communicating something worthwhile for them to want to read. You must give them quality content which is of VALUE to them, not just bombard them with your next offer. Show them you actually care that there is a real person looking at your next email.
5: Closing
You will find that not many prospects will jump right in and buy your offer when they first see it. In fact for every 1,000 people you manage to get to your opt in, you'll be lucky if 10% take action on their first visit i.e. opt in, and perhaps 5% of those might actually spend money with you. That's 5 sales from 1,000 people successfully invited (you start to see why learning these skills is important). You need to turn them from a prospect into a customer and whether you're online or offline that means closing the deal.
As this is not a sales training course I will not go into tips and techniques for 'getting the sale' here except to say - as it applies to the online marketer - your closing tool online is your landing page and/or sales funnel so, again, it's incredibly important that you get these right, and to do this you need the proper training -as with all of these skills - to learn to do it the right way.
6: SIX? I thought there were only 5! Not a skill as such but a CONSCIOUS CHOICE... ETHICS
If you can't be ethical and honest then seriously - don't fuck it up for everyone else by peddling your bullshit all over the place. If you're going to promote something make sure you know about it and trust it - better still buy and use it yourself first. One golden rule of marketing has always been: NEVER SELL ANYTHING YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN
In the long run it will serve you well and secure your success.

Get Response: As an Email Marketing platform Get Response is one of the easiest, most flexible, and best value to use. I use several Email marketing Platforms but G.R. is certainly a favorite.
